Banking and the environment
The relationship between a financial institution and the environment is twofold. In its capacity as a branch organisation, it represents an environmental burden. In addition, it acts as financial intermediary, which enables it to steer choices in a specific direction. ABN AMRO's prime objective is to maximise shareholder value in the longer term. The bank seeks to achieve this goal by finding the right balance between economic, social and environmental considerations. Issues like the covering of financial risks, reputation and ABN AMRO's social responsibilities also play a role in this respect. When it comes to the environment, the bank's ambition is to meet the highest possible standards. ABN AMRO's second environmental report, which covers the years 1998 to 2000, has been audited by an independent auditor. The purpose of this report is to enable the bank to account for its environmental policy to external parties such as shareholders, customers and suppliers, as well as to its own staff at home and abroad. Environmental activities currently largely focus on the Dutch operations, but the plan for the future is to implement the environmental policy on a world wide basis.
